25 Photos that Shape a Year, 2019.

This was prompted by an article I read by Artifact Uprising, and it can explain really well how important it is to really dive deep into some meaningful ways to define your year. I’m not finished fully writing about why I chose each photo, but it’s a work in progress as I try to process more about my year. And at the end, there are more honorable mentions because I couldn’t pick just 25 images that shaped my 2019.

  1. The kind of photo that doesn’t happen every year.

Marfa, TX on July 20. There are so many levels to this photo for me. I’m proud of it, and of how I get to remember this night so clearly. I got lucky parking my car in the daylight, facing this view of the Milky Way. You could see stars from each direction, sitting outside in my camp chair and watching the cargo train behind me roll through late that night. But this doesn’t happen every time, and I’m grateful to be able to appreciate that.

2. A photo that reminds you to dance like no one’s watching.

Marfa, TX on March 1. We’re All Going to Die Bedroom Grooves bringing us (here, it’s Hailley) dancing like you’re in your childhood bedroom. Like no one’s watching. For a really kind to yourself, powerful, and fun feeling, watch Stefan’s short film linked two lines above. And read the book to yourself every night.

3. A photo that reminds you to take pause.

White Sands National Monument on March 4. We slept for 2 hours, getting up at 3am to drive through the desert and arrive right at sunrise. With good friends on the road, leading to the quiet sand dunes. Every moment was a moment to stop and look around and see everything.

4. A photo that makes you feel small.

New York City on September 9. Just existing in this city is enough to make you feel small. But looking up really impresses upon you how big the world is around us.

5. A photo of a landscape you’ll never forget.
